PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION SERVICE

Pelvic floor dysfunction covers patients with pelvic floor problem and proctological (bottom related) which can affect daily living and quality of life significantly.

My pelvic floor Practice includes patients with faecal incontinence, constipation and obstructive defecation.  We offer a range of pelvic floor services to help and care for you. 

Rectal Prolapse

This can be a debilitating condition. I currently undertake Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (Lap VMR),
Delormes procedure, Altemeier’s procedure Unfortunately can affect elderly patients who can be frail.

Faecal
Incontinence

Faecal Incontinence affects a significant number of patients with almost 20% of patients thought to be affected.  Until recently treatment options were limited.  Most patients present following obstetric injury.

Constipation

One of the commonest diagnoses with up to 20% of the population suffering. Primary or secondary to other medical conditions which can include  neurological and metabolic conditions.

Obstructive Defecation

Obstructive defection affects a group of patients who normally present with symptoms similar to constipation.  We do assess this as a separate group of as the issues tend to be related with opening their bowels.

Haemorrhoidal Treatment

Although haemorrhoids are responsible for considerable economic cost and personal suffering. These account for one of the commonest anorectal diagnoses in outpatients and emergency depts.

Anal Fissures

One of the common conditions that we see but the one that affects patients quite significantly where they are unable to open their bowels and when they do, the muscle spasm causes them significant pain and discomfort.

Anal Fistulas

Anal fistulas can be quite a difficult problem to treat and this generally follows patients who have perianal abscesses which are either drained or sometimes discharge spontaneously or are treated successfully with antibiotics.

Pilonidal Sinus Disease

Pilonidal sinus disease (PD) is most commonly seen in and around the natal cleft. The reported incidence is around 25 per 100,000 with a male to female ratio between 3:1 and 4:1.

Colorectal
Surgery 

I undertake complex laparoscopic surgery for Colorectal cancer and also benign conditions including Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns/ Colitis), Diverticular disease

Endoscopy

I am a JAG accredited endoscopist and undertake gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. By undertaking these procedures I am also able to offer treatment for haemorrhoids as part of the procedure if necessary.

Hernia
Surgery 

A hernia is a protrusion through a weakness in the muscle wall or tissue.   The treatment for inguinal hernia can be open or laparoscopic.  I undertake both procedures and I am able to counsel the patient regarding the suitability of the relevant procedure. 

Biliary
Surgery

I manage patients with gallstone disease and undertake laparoscopic cholecystectomy. 

Proctology

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

We focus on restoring strength, function and movement within the pelvic area. We are specialist physiotherapists with postgraduate training and knowledge of a wide variety of treatment options. We work closely with other specialist services if required.

  • Help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement, exercise, manual therapy, education, and advice.
  • Focus on restoring strength, function, and movement within the pelvic area.
  • Are specialist physiotherapists with postgraduate training and knowledge of a wide variety of assessment and treatment options.
  • Work closely with other specialist services as required.

 

Pelvic Health Physiotherapists treat men and women with:

  • Stress incontinence – urinary leaking with certain activities, movements, or cough/sneeze/ laugh.
  • Overactive bladder/ urgency to urinate – having a sudden desire to go to the toilet immediately with or without leaking of urine before reaching the toilet.
  • Mixed urinary incontinence – a combination of stress incontinence and overactive bladder/urgency.
  • Frequency – the need to go more frequently to the toilet during the day or night
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse – weakening of the support structures that support especially around the vagina, resulting in movement or bulging of the pelvic organs.
  • Pain related pelvic floor dysfunction e.g., vaginismus.
  • Anal/Faecal incontinence – leakage of faeces or wind.
  • Obstructive defecation – difficult emptying the bowel, which may or may not be associated with constipation.

These problems are very common and tend to be ignored as they are often viewed as too embarrassing to talk about but we can help.
